The Connecticut Youth Political Advocacy Center (CYPAC) is issuing a strong stance following the recent arrests at Yale University. As an organization dedicated to empowering young voices and advocating for positive social change, CYPAC reaffirms its commitment to upholding the principles of free speech and the right to peaceful protest, while unequivocally condemning all forms of hate speech of any kind against any group.

The recent events at Yale University underscore the importance of protecting the fundamental right to express diverse viewpoints and engage in peaceful demonstrations. At the heart of any democratic society lies the freedom to voice opinions, challenge the status quo, and advocate for justice. CYPAC firmly believes that universities, as bastions of intellectual discourse and critical thinking, must serve as safe spaces for students of any background as well as open dialogue and constructive debate.

However, it is imperative to draw a clear line between free speech and hate speech. While individuals have the right to express their opinions, it is never acceptable to promote discrimination, bigotry, or violence against any group or individual. Hate speech not only undermines the principles of inclusivity and respect but also poses a threat to the safety and well-being of marginalized communities.

As an organization dedicated to fostering a culture of understanding and acceptance, CYPAC condemns any and all forms of hate speech, bigotry, and intolerance. We stand in solidarity with those who have been targeted and marginalized, and we urge universities and communities to actively combat hate speech through education, dialogue, and accountability.

CYPAC calls on all stakeholders, including students, faculty, administrators, and community members, to work together to create an environment where diversity is celebrated, and all voices are heard. Together, we can build a society that values empathy, compassion, and mutual respect.

Signed,

Jack Ventresca, Deputy Director

Ryan M. Engels, Executive Director
